Roles

Looking through your Personal Statement, you are now able to identify the aspects of your life that are important to you. As a by-product of the Personal Mission Statement exercise, you will find it easier to identify the Roles that you see as integral to your life, based on the ‘big picture’ achievements you set in your Personal Statement.

Since the foundation of your Roles is your Mission Statement, it is a must to update them when you reflect and amend your Personal Statement. Don’t be afraid to add new things, only make sure to be careful that they come from your Mission Statement and not from external sources.

Your Roles will likely fit within a pre-determined category, which are by default already prepared for you in the App. They include aspects such as ‘Work’, ‘Friends’ and ‘Hobbies’. These categories are an important basis that helps to trigger the appropriate Role for you to take charge of and work on. We realize that everyone is an individual; therefore we have allowed the option to change them to whatever is right for you.

Examples of Roles include:

  • Individual
  • Husband/Wife
  • Mother/Father
  • Office Manager
  • Goalkeeper for Soccer team
  • Pitcher for Baseball team
  • Volunteer as Scout Leader

Each person has their own specific role in the grander scheme of things. You may dream of doing something that looks better and looks to have a greater effect than what you are doing right now – however such thoughts are not those which are the keys to success, happiness and fulfilment. Everyone that knows and integrates the following principle into their lives becomes more focused and productive: – that each individual has his or her own personal abilities and strengths. By choosing to take the responsibility of your own roles in life you will attain and fill your place in the bigger picture. The secret of this is that your success, happiness and fulfilment comes by doing just this. Therefore it is wise to remember that it is more critical to isolate those roles in life that are important to you, to help you take your specific place in the world.

I learned that we can do anything, but we can’t do everything… at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything. – Dan Millman

Motivational Story

iAction – from knowledge of yourself to action to be yourself…

I want to tell you a story, which an amazing person once told me. There was once a man who was a stone-cutter for a living, so each and every day he would go to his place of work, which was this immense cliff, to chisel at the stone taking a little bit off at a time. After much work he would get thirsty and the river that flowed nearby would bring him water to drink and quench his thirst. After some time he began to realize that without the water he would not be able to continue with his work and that it must be the greatest power around, so he wished to be turned into water.

A miracle happened and he suddenly became the water. He would flow down the streams this way and that. He was always in joyful mood by sustaining all in his path. After some time he eventually flowed down to a lake and the heat of the sun would cause the water to evaporate. This made him think, and he began to realize that it must be the sun that was the greatest power around, so he wished to become the sun and provide such life force in the world.

Again a miracle happened and he was turned into the sun. Time would go by and he would beam out the rays of sunshine causing life to flourish on the earth. He would see the energy in plants and animals grow and he would put a spring in the step of all. Then one time a large cloud covered the sky. This brought all the good work he was doing to an abrupt end. He thought to himself that if the cloud could have such an impact that this must be the greatest power. So he wished to be the cloud…

And a miracle happened and he transformed into the cloud. He now started to provide rain for vegetation and man that were thirsty for it, shade for those that desired and warmth from any cold. Before too long a strong wind came and blew him away. He was swaying this way and that. In the middle of this occurrence he realized that it must be the wind that was the greatest power, so he wished to become the wind.

Behold his wish came true and he turned into the wind. Now it was his turn to influence the course of the clouds and to bring a cool breeze to those who were too hot. As he was floating around in his mighty strength he was forced to stop when he hit a large rock cliff. There was no way in getting through it, so he wished to be the large cliff as this must be the greatest power around.

His wish was granted and he became proud of his transformation since he was able to bask in such glorious conditions. All of a sudden he felt a sharp pinching and scratching that was continuous. He looked to and fro and saw that there was this small man with a chisel, picking away at the large rock cliff. ‘Ahh’, he thought, this must be the greatest power and wished to be made into the man.

The story may be simple, yet it draws an important lesson in life that we must always consider and bring to our attention. Each person has their own specific role in the grander scheme of things. We may dream of doing something that looks better and looks to have a greater effect than what we are doing now – however such thoughts are not those which are key to success, happiness and fulfilment. Everyone that knows the following principle becomes more focused and productive: – that each individual has his or her own personal abilities and strengths.

By choosing to take the responsibility of your own roles in life you will attain and fill your place in the bigger picture. And the secret of this is that your fulfilment comes by doing this. Therefore it is wise to remember that it is more critical to isolate those roles in life that are important to you, to help you take your specific place in the global community.
